Budget and prices

The subscription is the device: smart pet gear over four years

Monthly plans turn a cheap gadget into the most expensive thing in the house. Four-year totals, import duty arithmetic, and where the money really goes.

A $70 camera and a $120 feeder sound like the camera is the cheaper purchase. Over 4 years the camera costs $214 and the feeder $192, because one has a monthly plan behind it and the other does not. Subscriptions do not appear on the shelf label, and they are the line that decides this category.

This guide sets out the four-year totals, shows the import arithmetic for anything bought from abroad, and names the costs that only turn up in year two. Every figure is a worked example; this site quotes no retailer and carries no live prices.

Four years, with the plan in the total

The cost per year calculator takes purchase price, consumables per year, the years you keep it and any resale. With no resale assumed — a fair assumption for anything that has held food or water — the totals are simply price plus four years of plan or consumables.

A $100 tracker on a $6 monthly plan is $72 a year, so $388 over 4 years and $97 a year. The hardware is 26% of that; the plan is 74%. A $70 camera on a $3 monthly plan is $36 a year, so $214 over 4 years and $53.50 a year, with the plan at 67% of the total. A $120 feeder needing about $18 a year of batteries and desiccant comes to $192 and $48 a year, with consumables at 38%.

The $60 fountain is the one whose consumables are easy to underestimate. A $4 filter every 30 days is 365 ÷ 30 = about 12.2 changes a year, which is $48.67 — more than the pump cost. Over 4 years the fountain totals $254.67, or about $64 a year, which puts the cheapest device on the shelf third from the top on cost of ownership.

Where the four-year money actually goes (worked example, no resale)
DevicePricePlan or consumables over 4 yearsFour-year totalShare that is not hardware
GPS tracker$100$288$38874%
Indoor camera$70$144$21467%
Water fountain$60$194.67$254.6776%
Automatic feeder$120$72$19238%

Plan figures are $6 and $3 a month; fountain filters are $4 every 30 days, about 12.2 a year; feeder consumables are batteries and desiccant at $18 a year. Shares are rounded to whole percentages.

A shorter support window is a price rise

Every one of these totals assumes the device still works in year four. For anything with an app behind it, that is an assumption rather than a fact. Federal Trade Commission staff surveyed 184 connected products and found nearly 89% did not disclose how long the product would receive software updates; 161 gave no support duration or end date on the manufacturer's pages, and a search found nothing for 124 of them.

Put that in the arithmetic. The tracker's $388 over 4 years is $97 a year. If the service ends at 2 years, the same $388 — or rather the $244 you have spent by then — buys half the time, and the effective cost is $122 a year. A device that has to be replaced in year three resets the hardware line as well as the plan.

The FTC also notes that failing to tell prospective buyers how long software updates will last, on products sold with a written warranty, may implicate the Magnuson Moss Warranty Act, which requires written warranties on consumer products costing more than $15 to be available before sale. In practice the useful step is smaller than the law: ask, in writing, and keep the reply.

  • 184 products surveyed; nearly 89% with no published support duration
  • 161 of 184 gave no support information on the manufacturer's own product pages
  • A basic internet search found nothing for 124 of the devices
  • Written-warranty disclosure duties apply to consumer products costing more than $15
  • A 2-year support window turns the tracker example from $97 a year into about $122 a year

Buying from abroad: the lines that arrive after the order

U.S. Customs and Border Protection holds the importer — you — liable for the payment of duty, not the seller, and a courier's shipping charge does not include duty or processing fees. Shipments valued at $2,500 or less generally qualify for informal entry; above that, a formal entry with a customs bond is required.

The small-parcel exemption is gone. CBP states that the suspension of duty-free de minimis treatment applies to merchandise valued at $800 or less arriving via all modes, including the international postal network, and that all applicable duties, taxes and fees must be paid based on classification, country of origin and dutiable value.

The landed cost calculator follows the same order customs does: duty on the item price, then tax on item price plus shipping plus duty. On an $89 feeder with $19 shipping at an assumed 3% duty, duty is $2.67, the tax base is $110.67, and at an assumed 7% sales-tax rate the tax is $7.75. The landed cost is $118.42, about 33% above the listed price. Sales tax is set by state and locality rather than nationally, so that last line differs between two buyers of the same device.

Sales tax at an assumed 7%($89 + $19 + $2.67) × 0.07$7.75

The duty and tax rates are assumptions entered to show the method, not a customs ruling and not your state's rate. Change either and only the last two rows move.

The costs that appear in year two

Three lines arrive late. Pumps in fountains are the commonest replacement, and a spare pump is often a third of the fountain's price. Rechargeable cells in trackers and cameras lose capacity, so a device that ran 7 days on a charge in year one runs 4 days in year three, which changes the chore it was bought to remove. And plan prices change, usually upward, on a schedule you do not control.

In the official price index, pets and pet products rose 1.3% over the 12 months to September 2026 and pet food and treats rose 1.5%. Those are modest, and they are a reminder that hardware inflation is not the thing eating a pet budget; the recurring plan is.

The practical defence is to write the four-year total before the purchase and treat the monthly figure as what it is: the real price, paid slowly. A $6 plan is $288 over 4 years whether or not anyone ever says so on the box.

Before you buy

  • Multiply the monthly plan by 48 and add it to the purchase price before comparing two devices
  • Ask the manufacturer in writing how long software updates will continue, and keep the answer
  • Ask what the device does with no subscription and no network
  • Price a replacement pump, filter pack or battery before buying, not after one fails
  • If importing, enter item price, shipping, duty rate and your local sales-tax rate into the landed cost calculator
  • Check whether the plan is charged per device or per household

Questions readers ask

Is an annual plan cheaper than monthly?
Usually by 10% to 20%, and the saving is real only if the device outlives the year you prepaid. On the tracker example, $72 a year paid monthly against a $60 annual plan saves $12, which is worth having once you are confident the hardware and the service will both still exist in twelve months.
Can I use these devices without a subscription at all?
Some keep core functions locally and some do not, and the answer is rarely on the box. A camera that records to a memory card still records; one that only streams to a server stops. Ask specifically what remains without a plan, because that answer sets the floor on what your $70 or $100 actually bought.
Does a second pet double the cost?
For trackers it usually does, because plans are per device. For cameras and feeders it often does not, since one camera can watch two animals and a two-bowl feeder costs less than two feeders. Check whether the plan is priced per device or per household before adding a second animal to the budget.
Is second-hand worth considering?
For cameras and trackers sometimes; for anything that has held food or water, rarely. Hygiene drives resale prices down hard in this category, and the parts that matter — pumps, gaskets, hoppers — are the ones that wear. If the food-contact parts are not separately available as spares, buy new.
